Recently I had an eye-opening conversation with a retired Black physician. Born in 1935 and raised in the abusive and challenging segregated South, he attended schools that were subpar from the white schools on the other side of town. My curiosity stemmed around how a man who had endured so much racism, even in medical school where he was ordered by other doctors not to deliver any white babies while receiving “N” word insults by white patients, had achieved so much.
